With the official start of rainy season beginning October 1, Vista city officials are encouraging residents to take steps now to protect local waterways from contamination during upcoming storms.
During rainfall, water running off properties can collect various contaminants including bacteria, chemicals, fuel, and litter before entering storm drains throughout the city. Unlike wastewater systems, storm drains do not process or filter this runoff before it moves into nearby creeks and rivers, according to city information.
The direct connection between storm drains and natural waterways means that whatever pollutants are swept up during rain events end up in the region's water systems without any treatment or cleaning.
City officials are asking residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity they witness. Those who see materials being dumped into storm drains or streets, or notice water flowing into roadways, can contact the city's water quality hotline at (760) 643-2804. Reports can also be submitted through the city's online problem reporting form or by emailing waterquality@vista.gov.
