City officials are reminding residents about critical school bus safety regulations as students continue their daily commutes throughout Vista.
Under California law, motorists must come to a complete stop whenever a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop arm. These signals indicate that children are boarding or leaving the bus, and drivers who attempt to pass risk endangering student lives.
The requirement applies to traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus. However, vehicles on the opposite side of a divided highway or multi-lane roadway are exempt from stopping, though they must still remain alert for students who may be crossing the street.
City officials emphasized that the brief delay required to wait for a school bus can prevent tragic accidents. They are urging all drivers to remain vigilant during peak school travel times and to comply with bus safety laws to protect young pedestrians in the community.
