City of Vista officials are reminding residents that disposing of fats, oils, and grease by pouring them down kitchen sinks can lead to significant plumbing problems and environmental damage.
When these substances are washed down drains, they solidify as temperatures drop, accumulating on the interior walls of pipes. This gradual buildup can eventually create total blockages that result in sewage backing up into homes and affecting entire neighborhoods, according to city authorities.
The problem extends beyond individual properties. When grease clogs municipal sewer infrastructure, it can trigger overflows that enter storm drain systems. Unlike sewage, which is routed to treatment facilities, stormwater flows directly into nearby streams and other bodies of water without undergoing any purification process.
City officials are encouraging residents to take preventive measures to keep these materials out of their drains in order to safeguard both private property and the local aquatic environment.
Anyone who witnesses illegal dumping into storm drains or streets, or notices water flowing inappropriately into roadways, should contact Vista's water quality hotline at (760) 643-2804. Reports can also be submitted through the city's online problem reporting system or via email at waterquality@vista.gov.
