Vista residents turned out in large numbers on Saturday, September 26, for a morning dedicated to bicycling and active transportation. The San Diego Association of Governments unveiled the third phase of the Inland Rail Trail, while the city simultaneously held its annual Cyclovia celebration in the downtown area.
The newly completed trail segment extends from Mar Vista Drive to Civic Center Drive, continuing a regional pathway that connects Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, and parts of unincorporated San Diego County. The multiuse trail is designed to keep cyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorized users safely separated from automobile traffic.
Vista's third annual Cyclovia event featured a variety of activities aimed at cyclists of all skill levels. Attendees enjoyed bike rodeos, electric bicycle demonstrations, group rides, BMX stunt performances, and live music. Local community organizations also participated in the event, which organizers said attracted both seasoned cyclists and newcomers to the open streets format.
Those interested in cycling advocacy and infrastructure planning can attend an upcoming meeting of the San Diego County Bike Coalition's Advocacy Committee. The gathering is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kung Fu Noodle on East Vista Way. Topics will include regional bike program updates and Vista's in-progress Sustainable Mobility Plan.
