A special subcommittee dedicated to planning veteran recognition elements at Carlsbad's upcoming Veterans Memorial Park wrapped up its work Wednesday after three meetings focused on gathering ideas from former service members and residents.
The subcommittee, formed by the City Council specifically for the park project, collected feedback during its meetings to develop recommendations on how the facility can best honor those who served in the military. Staff members created concept designs based on input received from veterans and community members throughout the process.
The planned park will feature a Veterans Memorial Plaza dedicated to recognizing all six branches of the United States Armed Forces. A separate public art section will also be incorporated, providing additional opportunities to include features that pay tribute to veterans.
Among the recommendations being forwarded to the full City Council are options for donation-based memorial elements that would allow individuals to sponsor tributes to specific veterans or military groups. These offerings would expand upon memorial programs the city already operates.
The City Council is scheduled to review the subcommittee's final recommendations on November 10, one day ahead of Veterans Day. Conceptual drawings of the proposed features are available in the staff report for the meeting.
