A modern animal shelter has begun operations in Santee, representing a significant investment in animal welfare services for San Diego County's unincorporated communities.
County Animal Services officially opened the doors to the new facility on October 15. The project carried a price tag of $37 million and was designed to deliver substantial improvements in how the county cares for animals and serves residents.
The Santee location will serve as a hub for animal services throughout unincorporated parts of the county, providing updated infrastructure to replace older facilities that previously handled these responsibilities.
Officials say the new shelter marks a major upgrade in the county's capacity to house, treat, and care for animals while also better serving community members seeking animal-related services.
