The Port of San Diego will partner with several state agencies and environmental organizations to host a no-cost collection event for expired marine flares on Saturday, October 24. The drive aims to prevent environmental contamination from improper disposal of these potentially hazardous items.
According to organizers, single-use marine flares contain toxic substances such as perchlorates that can contaminate soil and waterways when discarded in regular trash or allowed to break down over time. These chemicals threaten marine ecosystems and potentially compromise drinking water quality. The devices also present fire and explosion risks for boat owners.
Boaters can drop off expired or unwanted hand-held signal flares, smoke signals, and aerial or parachute flares at the Shelter Island Boat Launch, located at 2210 Shelter Island Drive, between 8 a.m. and noon. Both damaged and undamaged flares will be accepted, though military-grade devices are prohibited. Those who participate can receive one complimentary reusable electronic signal device per vehicle while supplies remain available.
The California Product Stewardship Council, California State Parks, California Coastal Commission, and Arcwood Environmental are collaborating with the Port on the initiative. The Port of San Diego operates as a special district managing 34 miles of bayfront across five cities without relying on tax revenue.
