The leader of the Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department has announced plans to retire at the end of 2026, concluding a career spanning more than two decades with the agency.

Magda Fernandez, who has served as Chief of Harbor Police and Public Safety since May 2022, will officially retire on December 10, 2026. Her appointment marked a historic milestone as she became the first Latina to lead the Harbor Police and the first Latina chief law enforcement officer anywhere in San Diego County. Fernandez began her tenure with the department in 2001 as a recruit and advanced through multiple leadership positions before being named chief.

Port of San Diego President and CEO Scott Chadwick praised Fernandez for her commitment to both public safety and community relations. He credited her with strengthening the department and fostering trust across neighborhoods surrounding San Diego Bay. The Harbor Police Department operates across five cities along the bay and also provides security services at San Diego International Airport under contract.

During her tenure as chief, Fernandez implemented a comprehensive strategic plan emphasizing workforce development, financial sustainability, community partnerships, and public protection. She prioritized officer wellness initiatives and expanded community engagement programs, including ongoing partnerships with Perkins Elementary in Barrio Logan that connect officers with students through various activities. Her leadership has earned recognition from multiple organizations, including the National Latina Businesswomen Association and MANA de San Diego.

The Harbor Police Department employs approximately 145 sworn officers and 30 civilian staff members. Officers receive cross-training in both law enforcement and marine firefighting, and many obtain additional specialized skills for tactical operations, underwater rescue, and vessel collision investigations. The department collaborates with state and federal agencies on regional security efforts.

Assistant Chief Jeffrey Geary will succeed Fernandez as chief, while Captain Jonathan George has been appointed to serve as assistant chief, according to the Port leadership.
