The Port of San Diego has secured platinum-tier status in the San Diego Association of Governments' Diamond Awards for a fifth year running, officials announced this week. The recognition highlights the agency's commitment to promoting environmentally friendly transportation options among its employees.
SANDAG presents the Diamond Awards annually to organizations that actively support sustainable commuting practices. The Port received the program's highest distinction for its ongoing work to lower emissions generated by employee travel.
Board Chair Ann Moore emphasized that the commuter initiative reflects the Port's broader environmental commitment. She noted the agency aims to demonstrate that protecting the environment and maintaining economic strength can work hand in hand.
The Port's program includes full reimbursement for employees who use public transportation, carpool, or vanpool, covering expenses such as bus, trolley, and train passes. Workers also benefit from flexible remote work options that cut down on driving, plus shower and changing facilities for those who bike or walk to work.
Recent survey data shows just 68% of Port employees drive alone to work, surpassing the Diamond Awards benchmark requiring less than 80% single-occupancy vehicle commuting. The agency has also organized educational events including bicycle promotion activities and vanpool information sessions.
The recognition arrives during Green Port Month, when the Port highlights its environmental achievements. The independent district manages 34 miles of San Diego Bay waterfront across five cities without collecting tax revenue.
