Transportation officials will close northbound Interstate 805 at Palm Avenue for a 12-hour period starting Friday night, October 9, at 9 p.m., with the freeway expected to reopen by 9 a.m. Saturday morning. The closure will allow crews to install falsework as part of ongoing construction at the interchange.

Drivers heading north on I-805 will need to exit and take northbound Interstate 5 instead. Those wishing to return to I-805 can use eastbound State Route 54 to reconnect. The onramp at Via de San Ysidro will stay open but will redirect traffic onto westbound SR-905, where motorists can follow a similar detour pattern using I-5 and SR-54. The Palm Avenue northbound onramp will remain accessible throughout the closure.

The work is part of the Palm Avenue and I-805 Interchange Improvements project, a joint effort between Caltrans District 11 and the City of San Diego. The $31 million project includes expanding the Palm Avenue bridge over the freeway, adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities, constructing retaining walls, and upgrading Palm Ridge Park's parking area.

Construction started in June 2026 and is scheduled to wrap up by fall 2028. The project receives funding from both the City of San Diego and the Federal Highway Administration. Officials cautioned that the work schedule could change depending on weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other unforeseen circumstances, and advised drivers to expect delays in the area.
