Drivers traveling on Interstate 805 near Palm Avenue should expect overnight closures over four separate nights this week as work continues on a major interchange improvement project, transportation officials announced.

The northbound side of I-805 will be closed at Palm Avenue on Tuesday, September 29 and Sunday, October 4, while the southbound side will be shut down on Thursday, October 1 and Monday, October 5. All closures will run from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. and are needed to install false work for the construction project.

Motorists heading south will be redirected onto westbound State Route 54, with those needing to continue south able to reach Interstate 5, then State Route 905, before reconnecting with I-805. Drivers traveling north will be rerouted to westbound SR-905 and can access northbound I-5 and eastbound SR-54 to rejoin the interstate. Some on-ramps will stay open during the work but will require exiting at Palm Avenue.

The closures are part of a $31 million Palm Avenue interchange improvement project being carried out jointly by Caltrans and the City of San Diego. The work includes expanding the Palm Avenue bridge over the freeway, adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and upgrading infrastructure to improve traffic flow in the area. Construction started in June 2026 and is expected to finish by fall 2028, with funding provided by San Diego and the Federal Highway Administration.

Officials cautioned that the work schedule could change due to weather conditions or traffic incidents, and advised travelers to anticipate delays and watch for construction workers and equipment in the area.
