Caltrans will shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the Highway 54 connector Wednesday night to install overhead signage, with the closure lasting from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Thursday.
Drivers heading south on I-5 will need to use a detour route during the closure. The suggested alternate path directs motorists to take eastbound Highway 54 to southbound Interstate 805, then connect to eastbound Highway 905 before returning to I-5. Digital message boards will be positioned along roadways to alert drivers of the closure and recommended detours.
The overnight work is part of the broader I-5 Asset Management Project, which aims to maintain and upgrade a southern portion of the interstate stretching through San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City. The project area extends from Camino De La Plaza to approximately one-third of a mile south of Via De La Valle.
According to Caltrans, the infrastructure initiative includes pavement rehabilitation on the main roadway, shoulders, and ramps, along with various improvements focused on safety, performance, and environmental protections. People living and working near the construction zone should expect noise and lighting throughout the night.
Officials noted the work schedule could change due to weather, traffic incidents, or construction-related issues. Drivers are encouraged to remain alert for workers and equipment in the area.
