Local law enforcement will conduct two special traffic enforcement operations this month aimed at protecting people on foot, coinciding with National Pedestrian Safety Month in October.

The Oceanside Police Department has scheduled the operations for October 12 and October 19, with officers focusing on driver violations that pose the greatest danger to those walking. Traffic Sergeant Timothy Ricci emphasized that motorists bear significant responsibility for pedestrian safety, noting that people outside vehicles lack the protections afforded to those inside them.

According to Ricci, the department is working to emphasize basic safety practices including reduced speeds, adherence to posted limits, driver attentiveness, and proper yielding at crosswalks. The enforcement operations will target violations such as excessive speed, illegal turning maneuvers, failure to yield right-of-way, and disobeying traffic control devices.

Federal data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals the severity of the problem nationwide, with an average of 19 pedestrians losing their lives daily in traffic incidents across the country. Last year saw approximately 7,080 pedestrian fatalities nationwide, with California accounting for more than 1,090 of those deaths.
