Law enforcement officials in Oceanside are calling on the community to prioritize student safety as the city observes National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on October 7. The annual observance promotes healthy commuting habits while emphasizing safety awareness for young pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic Sergeant Timothy Ricci of the Oceanside Police Department emphasized that ensuring students can travel safely to and from school requires cooperation from all community members. He noted that the event serves as an important reminder for motorists to exercise caution and remain aware of children using pedestrian infrastructure.
According to Ricci, drivers play a critical role in student safety by reducing their speed, maintaining alertness, and watching for young people in crosswalks, on sidewalks, and in bicycle lanes. He stressed that responsible driving decisions directly impact the wellbeing of students who depend on these pathways daily.
Officials are reminding motorists that heightened awareness should extend beyond the special event itself. With more students expected to walk and bicycle, drivers need to be ready to yield for school buses and young pedestrians, particularly in designated school zones where reduced speed limits are in effect.
