Oceanside officials are calling for community members to submit nominations for the city's 2027 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award, which celebrates local volunteers who have dedicated substantial time and effort toward bettering the community.
Established in 1990, the annual recognition honors individuals who have worked to strengthen neighborhood bonds, support positive development initiatives, and improve the quality of life for fellow residents. The award carries Dr. King's name as a tribute to his advocacy for civil rights, educational equity, labor protections, and voter access, as well as his work fostering understanding across diverse populations.
Eligibility for the award extends to all Oceanside residents as well as military service members stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton. Organizers emphasized that nominations are open regardless of the candidate's race, ethnicity, age, or the particular nature of their volunteer contributions.
Those wishing to nominate someone can access the required forms through the city's official website. Completed nominations must be submitted by 4 p.m. on November 24, 2026. All nominees will receive recognition at a breakfast event honoring Dr. King's legacy on January 18, 2027, where the award recipient will be announced.
