A section of Interstate 805 will be shut down overnight this weekend as part of a major infrastructure project in San Diego. The northbound lanes near Palm Avenue will close for 12 hours beginning Friday, October 9 at 9 p.m., with the roadway scheduled to reopen by 9 a.m. Saturday.
Caltrans and the City of San Diego are conducting the closure to allow crews to install scaffolding for the Palm Avenue and I-805 interchange improvement project. Drivers heading north on I-805 will be rerouted onto Interstate 5. Motorists wishing to return to northbound I-805 can take State Route 54 eastbound and then merge back onto I-805.
The on-ramp at Via de San Ysidro will remain open during the closure, though traffic will be directed onto westbound SR-905. From there, drivers can connect to northbound I-5, then eastbound SR-54, and finally rejoin I-805. The northbound on-ramp at Palm Avenue will stay open throughout the work period.
The closure is part of a $31 million partnership between Caltrans District 11 and the City of San Diego that began in June 2026. The project aims to widen the Palm Avenue bridge, add bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, build retaining walls, improve landscaping, and upgrade parking at Palm Ridge Park. Officials expect construction to wrap up in fall 2028.
Authorities cautioned that the work schedule could change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other unforeseen circumstances. Travelers are advised to remain alert in work zones and watch for highway workers and construction equipment.
