A new playground designed around maritime themes welcomed its first visitors to the Chula Vista waterfront this week, as local officials and families gathered to mark the completion of the latest phase in an ongoing bayfront redevelopment effort.

The facility includes climbing structures, slides, a hill with rope-climbing features, shaded gathering spaces, and picnic spots suitable for children across different age groups. Pedestrian paths link the playground to surrounding areas within Harbor Park, which previously operated under the name Bayside Park and is being expanded from roughly 12 acres to approximately 25 acres total.

Local community members provided input during the planning process for the playground, according to Port of San Diego Board Chair Ann Moore, who emphasized the goal of creating recreational opportunities for multiple generations. Chula Vista Mayor John McCann highlighted the space as a venue for family activities and neighborhood connections.

The playground represents one component of a $15 million improvement project for the southern section of Harbor Park. A water splash pad is scheduled to open nearby in spring 2027, while separate landscaping and walkway upgrades in the park's northern area are expected to finish that same year as part of a $4 million initiative.

Funding for the northern improvements comes partly from a state Coastal Conservancy grant totaling $6.6 million, with up to $2.26 million allocated to that phase and the remainder earmarked for future beach and boat launch construction. The park expansion forms part of a broader Chula Vista Bayfront transformation that has already delivered Sweetwater Park and several hospitality facilities in recent years.
