A new animal shelter operated by County Animal Services is scheduled to begin operations in Santee on October 15, officials announced.

The facility has been designed with significant improvements over older shelters, featuring enhanced medical treatment areas and updated kennel systems. According to the agency, the design incorporates modern standards for animal housing.

Officials say the shelter was planned with animal welfare as a priority. The building includes features intended to minimize anxiety in sheltered animals while providing greater opportunities for enrichment activities and social interaction.

The new facility is expected to serve both the animals in the county's care and the broader community more effectively than previous locations.
