San Diego's mayor has issued a sharp rebuke of federal immigration authorities following enforcement activity that occurred in the vicinity of John Marshall Elementary School earlier this week.

Mayor Todd Gloria expressed outrage over the Wednesday incident, stating that parents should not live in fear of family separation while performing routine activities like taking their children to school. He characterized the enforcement action as needlessly causing widespread anxiety among students, families, and school staff.

The mayor emphasized that such operations create ripple effects throughout the community, potentially discouraging families from bringing children to school and forcing educators to help young students cope with fears no child should face. Gloria argued these tactics fail to enhance public safety while causing significant harm.

Joining Superintendent Bagula and other local officials in denouncing the federal action, Gloria has formally requested that the Department of Homeland Security implement more rigorous oversight of immigration enforcement operations. He specifically demanded that ICE cease conducting enforcement activities at or near school facilities during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup periods.

Gloria concluded by affirming the city's support for immigrant communities and asserting that schools must remain safe environments where children can focus on learning without fear of family separation.
