San Diego County supports a remarkably diverse population of spiders, ranging from common garden varieties to species that often alarm residents who encounter them unexpectedly.

The region's arachnid inhabitants include orb weavers, wolf spiders, black widows, brown recluse spiders, and even large, hairy tarantulas. These creatures display varied hunting behaviors, with some creating webs while others actively chase down their prey across the ground.

While many people react with fear or surprise when spotting these eight-legged animals, not everyone shares that perspective. Tyler Tkachuk, an agricultural scientist with the county, has developed an appreciation for the local spider population that sets him apart from those who instinctively recoil at the sight of them.
