All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 will be shut down at the Via de San Ysidro off-ramp late Monday night as crews install overhead signage, transportation officials announced. The closure is scheduled from 11 p.m. Monday, October 5, until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Drivers heading south will need to exit at Via de San Ysidro, make a left turn, then turn right onto East San Ysidro Boulevard before accessing the southbound Interstate 805 on-ramp. The pedestrian bridge at Willow Road will also be inaccessible during the same hours. Electronic message boards will be posted along roadways to alert motorists of the closure and guide them to alternate routes.

The overnight work is part of the I-5 Asset Management Project, a comprehensive infrastructure improvement initiative with a total cost of $113 million. The multi-year effort spans a section of the interstate running through San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City, stretching from Camino De La Plaza to just south of Via De La Valle.

Project goals include extending pavement life on the main highway, shoulders, and ramps while enhancing safety features and modernizing the corridor for current and future traffic demands. Officials said the work will improve ride quality and reduce long-term maintenance requirements.

Funding comes from the State Highway Operation Protection Program, with approximately $102.6 million in federal money and $11.1 million in state funds from Senate Bill 1. Caltrans warned that residents and businesses near the construction zone should expect noise and lighting during nighttime work hours, and reminded drivers to remain alert for workers and equipment. The schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
