All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 will be temporarily closed at the State Route 54 connector late Wednesday night as part of ongoing highway improvements, transportation officials announced.

The closure will begin at 10 p.m. on September 30 and continue until 6 a.m. the following morning to allow crews to install overhead signage. Drivers heading south on I-5 will need to use a detour route that includes eastbound SR-54 to southbound I-805, then eastbound SR-905 to reconnect with I-5.

Digital message boards will be positioned along roadways to alert drivers of the closure and direct them to alternative routes. Residents and businesses in the vicinity should expect construction noise and lighting throughout the overnight hours.

The work is part of the larger I-5 Asset Management Project, which aims to maintain and upgrade a southern stretch of the interstate running through San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City. The multifaceted project includes pavement rehabilitation on main lanes, shoulders, and ramps, along with safety improvements and infrastructure modernization designed to reduce long-term maintenance requirements.

Officials reminded motorists to remain alert when traveling through work zones and to watch for highway workers and construction vehicles. The scheduled closure could be postponed due to weather, traffic incidents, or other unforeseen circumstances.
