San Diego's public transit agency is preparing to boost rail service as the Padres prepare to host postseason baseball at Petco Park this week. The Metropolitan Transit System announced enhanced trolley operations for the team's Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs, with the franchise set to play three home games after securing a playoff berth.
According to MTS Board Chair Stephen Whitburn, who also serves on the San Diego City Council representing the downtown area, the increased service aims to help fans bypass congestion and parking challenges. Trolleys will run at 15-minute intervals or better before and after each contest, providing direct access to stations adjacent to the ballpark.
The enhanced schedule covers games scheduled for September 29 and 30, both with 7 p.m. start times, with similar service planned for a third game once its time is confirmed. Three trolley routes—the UC San Diego Blue Line, Orange Line, and Green Line—all serve stops within walking distance of the stadium.
Transit officials are encouraging fans to use Park & Ride facilities located throughout the system. Riders can pay the $2.50 one-way fare by tapping contactless credit cards or mobile devices at platform validators, or by using the PRONTO mobile application loaded with at least $5 for round-trip travel. Fares are set to increase to $3 per trip starting October 1.
The transit system serves 10 municipalities and unincorporated areas across San Diego County, carrying more than 250,000 passenger trips on an average weekday across its 93 bus routes and four trolley lines.
