The El Cajon Police Department is calling on local schools, parents and students to take part in this year's National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on October 7, emphasizing the importance of safe practices for students who travel to campus on foot or bicycle.

According to Sergeant Brian Ehlers of the El Cajon Police Department, the yearly observance serves as an opportunity to highlight the collective responsibility of ensuring student safety during their commutes. He stressed that motorists must remain vigilant, reduce speeds and watch carefully for young pedestrians and cyclists using designated crossing areas and pathways near schools.

With more students expected to walk and bike during the event, police are urging drivers to exercise caution not only on the designated day but throughout the school year. Motorists should be ready to stop for school buses and children in crosswalks, and observe reduced speed limits in school zones.

The police department has also published safety guidelines for students who use active transportation methods to reach school. Educational institutions interested in participating can document their involvement through the official event website at walkbiketoschool.org.

Support for the safety initiative comes from grant funding provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
