A new county initiative gave Halloween pumpkins an environmentally friendly destination after the holiday ended, with local farm animals reaping the benefits.
The county held its first-ever Pumpkin Smash event in Lakeside, collecting approximately 2,000 pounds of used Halloween pumpkins from residents. Rather than ending up in landfills, the donated gourds were given to livestock at a nearby farm and animal sanctuary.
Goats and pigs at the sanctuary were among the animals that enjoyed the post-Halloween bounty. The event offered residents a sustainable way to dispose of their seasonal decorations while providing nutritious treats for farm animals.
The program demonstrates how holiday waste can be repurposed to serve the community and reduce environmental impact. By diverting nearly a ton of organic material from the waste stream, the inaugural event created a win-win situation for both environmentally conscious residents and local agriculture.
