The San Diego County Probation Department has received complete authorization from state health officials to operate a specialized program designed to support young people preparing to leave custody.

The California Department of Health Care Services recently granted full approval for the department's CalAIM 90-day pre-release initiative. The program serves youth who are currently in detention facilities under the county's supervision.

CalAIM represents California's multi-year effort to transform its Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal, with an emphasis on coordinating health services for vulnerable populations. The pre-release component allows eligible individuals to begin receiving certain health care services before they are released from custody.

The approval marks a significant milestone for the county's probation system as it works to improve health outcomes and reduce recidivism among young people transitioning back into their communities.
