County Fire officials have launched their inaugural targeted grazing initiative, deploying more than 500 goats to manage vegetation at a Valley Center recreation area. The animals are currently working to clear flammable plant material at Star Valley Park as part of an expanded approach to wildfire mitigation.

Approximately 525 goats are grazing the park grounds, consuming vegetation that could otherwise serve as fuel during wildfire season. The herd-based approach represents a new strategy for the county's fire prevention portfolio.

Officials describe the grazing project as an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional vegetation management methods. By using livestock to reduce fire hazards, the county aims to lower wildfire risk while minimizing ecological impact in the area.
