A sweeping proposal to transform nearly 50 acres in San Diego's Midway District cleared a significant hurdle Friday after receiving unanimous support from the city's Land Use and Housing Committee.

The redevelopment initiative, known as Midway Rising, would bring thousands of residential units, community amenities, and a contemporary entertainment facility to the area. Mayor Todd Gloria characterized the committee's vote as a major step forward for what he described as one of the most substantial redevelopment projects in the city's history.

According to Gloria, city officials have been working to assemble the necessary partners and establish a framework for responsible development since the project's inception. The effort has involved coordination between municipal staff, the private development team, local community members, and state officials in Sacramento.

The proposal now advances to the full City Council for consideration. Mayor Gloria expressed appreciation for the committee's backing and said his administration remains committed to moving the project toward completion.
