Authorities have taken a second person into custody in connection with a deadly traffic collision earlier this month that claimed the life of a Carlsbad resident.
Catalina Orjuela Rivera, 23, of Carlsbad, was arrested on the evening of September 23 on suspicion of acting as an accessory after the fact and filing a false crime report with law enforcement. Police apprehended Rivera at approximately 6:49 p.m.
According to investigators, Rivera allegedly assisted Fernando Saldana following the fatal crash and then attempted to falsely report the vehicle involved in the incident as stolen to the Carlsbad Police Department. The charges against her include violations of California Penal Code sections 32 and 148.5(a).
The original collision occurred on September 15 along Carlsbad Boulevard and resulted in the death of Vanessa Wheyland, a local resident. Rivera was subsequently booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
The Carlsbad Police Department says its investigation into the fatal collision remains active and ongoing.
