Municipal workers in Carlsbad are conducting routine inspections of the city's underground sewer infrastructure using remote-controlled camera systems as part of preparations for potential El Niño weather conditions.

The inspection process relies on technology that resembles consumer gaming equipment. One employee feeds cable into the pipe while a colleague operates controls to navigate a closed-circuit camera through the sewer lines, monitoring a screen for any signs of damage or deterioration that require attention.

The preventive maintenance strategy has already proven effective this year, identifying serious issues in two separate locations. Near Ponto and close to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, inspectors discovered sewer pipes that had cracked or suffered partial collapse. City officials responded by declaring emergency situations in both cases, which enabled accelerated repair work before the damaged infrastructure could create problems for residents.

The proactive inspection program is particularly important given the age of some local infrastructure, with certain pipes having been in service for more than a century. The city and Carlsbad Municipal Water District jointly provide water and wastewater services to over 30,000 residential and commercial properties, while districts including Olivenhain Municipal Water District and Vallecitos Water District serve southern areas of the city.
