Carlsbad residents will have an opportunity to dispose of unused and expired medications at a special collection event this Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Safety Training Center on Orion Street.
The event coincides with National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a semi-annual program organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The initiative provides a confidential and safe method for residents to get rid of unneeded prescription medications, including opioids, without any questions being asked.
City officials emphasize that proper medication disposal protects both the community and the environment. Flushing pharmaceuticals down toilets is not recommended because wastewater treatment facilities cannot effectively filter out drug compounds, which may eventually reach the ocean and pose risks to marine ecosystems.
While the Saturday event will accept pet medications, it cannot take liquids, needles, or syringes. For those unable to attend the weekend collection, the city maintains a year-round drop box at the Police and Fire Headquarters on Orion Way.
Residents who need to dispose of medical sharps such as needles and razors can bring them to the Palomar Transfer Station Recycling Buy Back Center on El Camino Real, open Monday through Saturday. Sharps must be placed in puncture-proof containers before drop-off. Mail-back disposal kits are also available through Republic Services for a fee.
