The city of Carlsbad is in the final stages of completing a major renovation and expansion project at Monroe Street Pool, officials announced this week.

Contractors recently finished applying plaster to the pool and have filled it with water, marking a significant milestone in the construction timeline. However, several critical steps remain before the facility can reopen to the public, according to Holly Angeles Gonzales of the Carlsbad Fire Department.

Outstanding work includes coordination with San Diego Gas & Electric for gas line installations, as well as final inspections and approval from the County Public Health Department. City officials emphasized they are working to expedite the reopening process while ensuring all safety requirements are met.

The upgraded facility will offer substantially more capacity than its predecessor, featuring a pool with 50 percent more lanes than before. The renovation encompasses nearly all aspects of the complex, including modernized restrooms, showers, locker rooms, lighting systems and mechanical equipment. Additional amenities such as new shade structures, expanded deck areas and bleacher seating are designed to improve comfort for swimmers, instructors and spectators.

City officials anticipate announcing an official reopening date in the coming weeks. Some minor construction may continue in isolated sections of the site after the pool becomes accessible to the public, though this work is not expected to interfere with regular operations.
