Carlsbad residents have several opportunities this fall to engage with the city's sustainability initiatives, from learning proper recycling techniques to participating in community repair events and safe disposal programs.

With America Recycles Day approaching on November 15, city officials are reminding residents that roughly 20 percent of materials placed in blue recycling carts cannot actually be recycled. Contamination from non-recyclable items makes sorting and processing more challenging. The city encourages residents to follow simple guidelines: avoid recycling items that are smaller than a credit card, materials that lose their shape or can be poked through with a finger, and anything dirty or greasy. When uncertain about an item, residents should keep it out of the recycling cart.

The city is also promoting yard preparation for the upcoming winter season. Officials recommend adding mulch and compost during fall months to improve soil health, reduce erosion during rainy periods, and conserve water year-round. Free compost and mulch are available six days a week at the Palomar Transfer Station's self-service station.

Local businesses can take advantage of special incentives through the Carlsbad Green Business Program. Companies that earn or renew their certification by November 23 will receive promotional benefits in time for Small Business Saturday. Free information sessions with sustainability consultants are available to help businesses through the certification process.

A community Fixit Clinic scheduled for October 24 will feature a fall theme and offer residents the chance to repair household items with help from volunteer coaches. Participants can bring broken electronics, appliances, tools, clothing, bicycles, and other items for assessment and repair. The event will also include heirloom clock repair services, knife and garden tool sharpening, and fall-themed activities. Registration is recommended, though walk-ins are accepted until 12:30 p.m.

Additionally, the city is partnering with Republic Services to host medication and sharps collection along with a document shredding and recycling event in November. Registration and proof of residency are required, with registration closing November 13 at 5 p.m.
