Carlsbad's Parks and Recreation Department has received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, joining an exclusive group of agencies recognized for excellence in service delivery and operations.
The city is just the second California municipality to earn the distinction this year, bringing the statewide total to eight accredited agencies. Nationwide, only 232 park and recreation departments hold this certification, which evaluates standards across facilities, programming, resources, safety protocols and community services.
According to Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Lancaster, the accreditation demonstrates the city's dedication to maintaining exceptional standards while ensuring continuous improvement in the field. He emphasized that the recognition confirms Carlsbad is meeting or surpassing nationally recognized best practices in delivering amenities and experiences residents expect.
The department manages substantial community assets, including more than 430 acres of developed parkland and over 600 acres of habitat preserves. Its portfolio encompasses four community centers, two aquatic facilities, a senior center, and numerous athletic courts and fields.
The agency also maintains approximately 51 miles of trails through open space areas and operates community gardens, beach access points, recreation classes, camps and special events that serve as gathering points for residents throughout the city.
