Carlsbad fire officials are reminding residents to exercise additional caution this Halloween, which falls on a Saturday and is expected to draw larger crowds of trick-or-treaters to neighborhood streets after nightfall.
Parents are encouraged to select costumes and footwear that allow children to move freely and remain visible in low-light conditions. Officials recommend incorporating reflective materials, tape, glow sticks, or flashlights into costumes. Face paint is preferred over masks, which can obstruct a child's field of vision. Families should also review basic pedestrian safety with children, including crossing only at intersections and remaining alert for vehicles reversing from driveways.
Motorists face their own set of responsibilities as foot traffic increases throughout residential areas. Drivers should reduce speed, eliminate distractions such as mobile phone use, and remain prepared for children who may unexpectedly enter roadways from between parked vehicles. Special attention should be paid when entering or leaving driveways.
For those hosting gatherings that include minors, Carlsbad's social host ordinance holds adults legally responsible if underage individuals gain access to alcohol or controlled substances at their property. City officials advise party hosts to provide substantial food options, offer non-alcoholic drinks, collect keys from guests who consume alcohol, and arrange transportation or overnight accommodations when necessary.
Residents are asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Carlsbad Police Department at 442-339-2197, or dial 911 in emergency situations.
