Pedestrians walking through Carlsbad's Barrio neighborhood at night now benefit from improved visibility thanks to more than 100 new lights that were energized in recent weeks. City officials celebrated the completion of the pedestrian lighting initiative with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.
The project added 115 pedestrian-scale lights throughout the Barrio this summer, with the fixtures activated in late September and early October. Unlike traditional streetlights, these shorter poles emit a warmer, less intense glow designed specifically for sidewalk illumination. City Council members and U.S. Representative Mike Levin attended the dedication event.
Funding for the lighting came from a federal allocation of up to $5 million that Representative Levin helped secure for the city, with the money distributed through the California Department of Transportation. The pedestrian lights accounted for half the total, while the remainder supported traffic calming measures including stop signs, marked crosswalks, flashing signals for pedestrians, an elevated crosswalk, and a traffic circle where Pine Avenue meets Harding Street.
Elsewhere in the city, two of four beach access stairways along Carlsbad Boulevard have reopened following reconstruction work. The stairs at Cherry and Hemlock avenues are now available to the public, while crews turn their attention to replacing the staircases at Maple and Sycamore avenues. Construction began in November 2025, paused during summer months, and resumed in September with an anticipated completion date of summer 2027.
In other updates, the Carlsbad Municipal Water District has intentionally lowered water levels at Lake Calavera Dam as a precautionary step before expected rainfall. The proactive measure creates additional storage capacity and helps protect downstream areas through controlled water releases when storms arrive.
The city also announced that the Cannon Biennial Exhibition opens Friday at Cannon Art Gallery, showcasing work from more than 80 local artists. The exhibition, themed "everywhere home," runs through January 3, with an artist reception scheduled for November 7 where visitors can vote for a community choice award winner.
